Chris Pallister- Vancouver Island Radio Personality

Working as a radio host is both somewhat of a dream job and challenging at times, according to Chris Pallister, an island born and raised radio personality. As many others, he started small and worked his way up. After he finished his media and communication studies at Camosun Collage, he moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta, before he moved to Edmonton for a few years working in smaller media companies. Later, he settled in Vancouver for 10 years, working as a mid-day Radio Announcer at Virgin Radio. Life in Vancouver was filled with many opportunities, but it wasn’t what he and his wife wanted for their family. They decided to move back to Victoria and raise their daughters on island time instead!

“It’s cool to be part of something new” said Chris about being a part of the re-branding of Virgin Radio in Victoria. He indeed thought it was a changeover going from working solo to pair up with a co-host. Virgin Radio were looking for someone that would fit working with Brittany King. Before Chris became a match, he and Brittany spend hours of talking in order to figure out if the co-op would work. Brittany and Chris are still trying to figure out what kind of people they are on air, at the same time as they are shaping the future of the show and their own careers.

“Who are listening right now, and what are they doing at that time” said Chris is the starting point to shape the show. They are adapting the content depending on their listeners demographics and routines, which is fundamental for creating a show their listeners like and will continue listening to. When Chris was a solo Radio Announcer, it was clear that the breaks had openings, a middle part and an end. Now, there is a pressure that the conversation between Brittany and Chris always have to be entertaining, something that is a challenge and could be hard to maintain.

Being an islander makes Chris proud and being a part of the island’s community is something he cherries both in his work-and personal life. Chris believes that the community and having a good on-air energy will contribute to positive future ratings for their show.
